As a child I was an avid reader and my parents gave me a lot of books to help with my English and I was always reading. It was fun to explore new worlds through the words that I was reading and my parents were of course supportive. Once I grew older I realized that English wasn’t the only language I needed to know, it was hard at first to broaden my horizons but it was worth it. We need to step out of our comfort zones once in a while to truly explore the world.
Key Takeaways:
- In Europe, all European languages are regarded as equally important, with English regarded as no more than another European language.
- This is a distinct approach and philosophy from those exhibited, for example, in Singapore, where English was chosen as a unifying language.
- Needing to learn a European language from scratch and find a way to blend into a different culture allowed her to gain many new skills and insights.
